A Place Where Beauty Meets Memory

On the southern coast of Haiti lies Port-Salut a beautiful seaside community known for its warm Caribbean waters, tropical landscape, peaceful beaches, and welcoming people. For many Haitians, especially those from the South, Port-Salut is more than a destination. It is a place connected to family, childhood, friendship, and memories that stay with us for a lifetime.

But for me, the story of Port-Salut is also deeply personal.

A Journey Back to 1994

In 1994, a little boy from the city of Les Cayes (Aux Cayes) known locally as Ka Massé traveled to Port-Salut for the very first time. I was that little boy.

Port-Salut was only about a 30-minute journey away, but to me, it felt like traveling into another world. I went with a friend who, many years later, would become my brother-in-law. We made the journey riding on top of a transportation vehicle called NANA.

There was something unforgettable about that ride the open air, the road stretching ahead of us, the excitement of being young and discovering somewhere new. We were not thinking about responsibilities, careers, or what life would eventually become. We were simply two young people enjoying an adventure.

And then we arrived in Port-Salut. The beauty of the coastline, the sea, the atmosphere, and the feeling of being there for the first time created a memory that never disappeared. Even after all these years, that trip remains one of the best moments of my life.

The Natural Beauty of Port-Salut

Port-Salut represents one of the natural treasures of southern Haiti. Its coastline reminds us of a side of Haiti that deserves to be seen by the world beautiful beaches, mountains, tropical vegetation, local communities, food, music, and a culture deeply rooted in the Caribbean.

One of the area's best-known attractions is Pointe Sable, whose beach and surrounding landscape have helped establish Port-Salut as an important destination for Haitians and visitors seeking the natural beauty of the country's southern peninsula. Yet the true beauty of Port-Salut goes far beyond its beaches and scenery.

The Beautiful People of Port-Salut

One of the things that has always stood out to me about Port-Salut is its people. Port-Salut is blessed not only with beautiful scenery, but also with beautiful, intelligent, talented, and welcoming people.

And I say with great affection and respect that Port-Salut is home to some of the most beautiful women in Haiti. Their beauty is not simply physical it is reflected in their character, intelligence, confidence, culture, and the pride they carry for their community.

The people of Port-Salut possess tremendous potential. Intelligence, creativity, entrepreneurship, and determination run throughout the community. These qualities are among Port-Salut's greatest resources, because the future of any community is ultimately built by its people.

A Dream for the Future of Port-Salut

My hope is that one day, the sons and daughters of Port-Salut those living there and those living elsewhere in Haiti or abroad will come together to help build the future of their hometown. Imagine what could happen if that collective talent, knowledge, investment, and love for Port-Salut were brought together.

The community could strengthen its hotels and restaurants, support local entrepreneurs, protect and improve its beaches, create employment for young people, promote Haitian art and culture, develop tourism infrastructure, and introduce Port-Salut to visitors from around the world.

Port-Salut already possesses something that cannot easily be created: natural beauty, history, culture, and extraordinary people. What it needs is a shared vision.

I hope to see the day when Port-Salut becomes not simply a place people pass through while traveling across southern Haiti, but a true must-visit destination — a place Haitians proudly recommend and international travelers specifically seek out.

More Than a Beach

When people speak about Haiti internationally, the conversation too often focuses only on the country's difficulties. But Haiti is much more than its problems. Places like Port-Salut tell another story.

They tell the story of a country with extraordinary natural beauty of childhood adventures, friendships, families, communities, intelligence, resilience, and experiences that money cannot replace.

For someone else, Port-Salut may simply be a beautiful beach on Haiti's southern coast. For me, it will always be the place where a little boy from Les Cayes arrived in 1994 after riding on top of NANA with a friend who would one day become his brother-in-law. We could never have known where life would take us.

But sometimes the greatest moments of our lives happen before we even realize how important they are. More than three decades later, I can still look back at that journey and remember what it represented: youth, freedom, friendship, discovery, and happiness.

That is my memory of Port-Salut.

That is my hope for Port-Salut.

And that is why Port-Salut will always hold a special place in my heart.
